Side Story: The Seeds of War was Countless

One day in the dungeon.

Among girls who were basically good friends, it was unusual to see Illuna and Enne fighting.

“No!” (Illuna)

“…Yes.” (Enne)

“Hmm, I know that Enne is a very determined person, but I have to say this! That’s just not right!” (Illuna)

“No, it is always prepared together when we have it at home. In other words, it’s expected to be together.” (Enne)

“But Onii-chan doesn’t do it!” (Illuna)

“Layla does.” (Enne)

The issue they were arguing about was… whether to put lemon on fried chicken.

It was a debate that could divide the world in two and cause a great war.

Everyone believed that they were in the right, and they held their own opinions and would never give in.

Yes, the world was in the midst of a great war between two factions: those who allowed lemon on fried chicken, and those who didn’t.

As variants of this war, there was also the fried egg soy sauce war, the mushroom-like sweets and bamboo shoot-like sweets war, and more, creating plenty of sparks to cause a war.

At that moment, Shii, who had been listening to the two arguing, also added her opinion.

“Yes! I think Shii prefers Mayonnaise-kun to Lemon-kun! Mayonnaise-kun is the best!” (Shii)

“Shii likes to put mayonnaise on everything, so she has no right to take part in this argument!” (Illuna)

“I agree.” (Enne)

“Eh, you’re both so mean!” (Shii)

Shii pouted, but in reality she just preferred things with a strong flavor, so she had no right to join the debate.

“Fried chicken is complete on its own! So there’s no need to add another flavor to it!” (Illuna)

“That logic is wrong. If that’s the case, then white rice is also complete on its own, but we don’t eat white rice by itself very often. In other words, cooking is not something that you should consider in isolation, but rather something that creates infinite possibilities through combining ingredients.” (Enne)

And then Shii spoke up again.

“Yes! I think the best furikake for white rice is bonito flakes!” (Shii)

“That’s completely irrelevant, and the most delicious furikake is salmon furikake!” (Illuna)

“I disagree with that. It’s not the furikake that improves the taste of white rice the most, but eating it with side dishes. But if I had to say, the best furikake would be cod roe.” (Enne)

“Cod roe just makes everything taste like cod roe! It doesn’t really feel like furikake!” (Illuna)

“Hmm, that may be true, but it’s definitely delicious.” (Enne)

“Well, that’s true, but I like it too!” (Illuna)

“I like it too!” (Shii)

The argument between the two about the food continued to heat up.

The two of them, who were firm in their beliefs, desperately tried to get the other party to agree to their opinion, even if they had to call the other family members to back them up.

“…if that’s the case, there’s nothing I can do! Onii-chan!” (Illuna)

“If that’s how you feel, Layla.” (Enne)

And so, they called out to the two adults.

“Oh… what’s the matter, Illuna?” (Yuki)

“What’s the matter?” (Layla)

“Big brother! Enne says that lemon is a must for fried chicken! You’re the one who doesn’t put lemon on it, right? So go and tell that stubborn person that lemon is not necessary!” (Illuna)

“…The stubborn one is you, Illuna. Layla, make sure you teach her that lemon is essential for fried chicken.” (Enne)

“Well, I don’t really mind whether there’s lemon or not…” (Yuki)

“I see, I understand. Shall I teach you the benefits of lemon on fried chicken?” (Layla)

“Big brother! You’ll lose if you do that! Layla-oneechan is so motivated!” (Illuna)

Seeing Illuna panicking, Yuki turned to Layla, somewhat perplexed.

“Oh, right. I understand. Since it’s Illuna’s request, I’ll ask. Regarding the lemon with fried chicken, why do you think that it’s natural to have lemon with fried chicken?” (Yuki)

“It was Yuki who first taught me about the dish called karaage, and it was Yuki who first prepared the lemon as a side dish, but…” (Layla)

“Oh, that’s right. I was the first to prepare lemon with fried chicken, Illuna.” (Yuki)

“But you don’t put lemon on fried chicken!” (Illuna)

“That’s true. Fried chicken is delicious on its own, so there’s really no need to add lemon!” (Yuki)

“But adding lemon gives it a tangy flavor and makes the taste more crisp. It’s true that fried chicken is delicious even without lemon. But having lemon makes the deliciousness even more pronounced.” (Layla)

“Illuna, this is bad. I’m going to lose after all.” (Yuki)

“Onii-chan!?” (Illuna)

“…Even though he’s my master, he’s just a fool.” (Enne)

Incidentally, the dinner that day was hamburg steak.

Hamburg steak was the best.

In this regard, they reached a consensus and concluded that “everyone has their own tastes. But hamburgers are delicious,” and the war ended.

And so, a chapter of the Karaage Lemon Great War was added to history.
