Xia Ling nodded.
Wei Shaoyin scanned her wheelchair for a long while. Then, he reached his hand out and then took it back, before finally asking with a perplexed look, “How long has this wheelchair not been disinfected?” He despised things from the hospital.
Xia Ling had almost forgotten he was a clean freak.
But this time, she wasn’t in the mood to bicker with him. “Hurry up and wheel me in!”
Wei Shaoyin still hesitated. He turned around to ask the receptionist, “Are there any wheelchairs in our storeroom? Bring a new one over.”
The receptionist knew that he was the Young Master of the Wei family, and replied politely, “There aren’t any more in the storeroom, but two new ones have just been brought into the Zone G experimental labs. Shall I bring one for you?”
“... Forget it.” Wei Shaoyin despised that even more. Zone G experimental lab? The virus contained in that area was the most destructive and harmful! He’d rather use an old and tattered wheelchair from any ordinary hospital than a new one from Zone G! He asked the receptionist for some tissue paper and covered his hands in them before holding the handles with a look of reluctance.
The building appeared simple and ordinary, but it was all just a facade to fool the common man.
The Wei family’s most impressive bases were built underground. Wei Shaoyin wheeled her through what looked like a maze before finally entering the lift that took them underground. After a long descent, they ended up in a vast space.
Why the word “vast”?
Simply because this was a mini man-made world on its own. Vegetation was abundant, the breeze was calming, and above their heads was a domed roof hundreds of meters high. Dotted with shimmering lights, it really appeared as if they were out in the wilderness. Places like these were usually constructed to prevent employees working in the basement from being claustrophobic. But such a large scale one like the Weis’ was really a first.
Wei Shaoyin wheeled her through the tall grasses and fireflies effortfully. The wind swept past them and it was a little chilly.
After a pretty long walk, an electronic gate stood in their way.
Wei Shaoyin reached out to scan his finger. The next moment, an automated voice came from the machine: [Gene matched, unlocked.] Immediately after, however, another recorded voice was heard: [Little Young Master Wei Shaoyin, your rights have been adjusted. This gate only allows you, and only you, to enter. Please do not bring anyone else along. Otherwise, he or she will be killed, period.]
Wei Shaoyin was speechless.
What was going on? Which ruthless person made such an adjustment to his rights?!
Xia Ling, on the other hand, figured it out. She sighed. “It seems like your uncle foresaw that I was going to come. He deliberately changed your rights so you wouldn’t bring me in to see him.”
Why did Wei Lingnan do that?
Hadn’t he always taken an interest in her?
Wei Shaoyin frowned, feeling that Xia Ling’s explanation was logical. “Wait here,” he said to her. He knew how impressive the security system was; if anyone were to access it without permission, lasers from all directions would kill them instantly. “I’ll look for my uncle and convince him to meet you.”
Xia Ling nodded her head and saw him enter.
A long time later, Wei Shaoyin still had not returned.
The weather in the man-made world took a turn. The stars flickered a little less brightly as a few snowflakes began falling to the ground before it developed into heavy snowfall. Xia Ling sat in her wheelchair and scanned the surroundings, before wheeling herself to a spot beneath a huge tree so as to avoid the snow. But still, the snowfall got heavier and branches began breaking, while more snow piled up on the ground, slowly concealing the path she’d come from. Xia Ling was shivering from the cold and holding herself tight.
Is it time to go back?
She thought as she looked at the locked electronic gate, and then at the path she came from.
As long she backed off to the lift, she’d be safe. She’d be able to get an employee to hand her some warm clothes, or maybe even a warm drink. But that way, she wouldn’t get to see Wei Lingnan. She looked up at the falling snow and thought, could Wei Lingnan be using such inclement weather to force her away? In a complex underground structure like this, was her every move in his surveillance?
She couldn’t be sure.
But no matter what, she wasn’t willing to back away just like this.
Her lips were turning purple from the cold, but she used all effort to yell into space, “Wei Lingnan! Don’t forget that I’m the Phoenix of the Xia family! If you dare freeze me to death, the Xia family won’t let you off!” She called out a few times, but all she heard was the howling wind, and besides that, a hollow silence.
She began having second thoughts—maybe Wei Lingnan wasn’t even watching her in the first place?
The main surveillance room was largely empty, with just a few wolf-like, dog-like creatures barking at and biting one another. In the midst of the tussle, a few of the buttons on the panel were damaged, one of which was responsible for the space Xia Ling was in. A row of levers that adjusted the temperatures was pulled to the lowest possible level, resulting in the corresponding screen showing heavy snowfall in the area. Blood spots dotted the room, and a corpse whose neck had been broken was on the ground.
“Experimental test number 21 specimens have escaped again!” A few people dressed in full protective suits and holding guns charged into the surveillance room and fired shots. A while later, a few of those strange creatures fell to the ground weakly.
One of the people said, “Lock them in their cages and record this experimental data. Then get someone to clean up the place and send a new surveillance room in-charge here.”
“Yes!” The other people in the same suit responded.
“Manager Lu, a few of the equipment have been damaged,” someone mentioned. “Should we get someone to check on those regions?”
The leader among them was irritated by the question. “Who can even make it into such a place? The specimens from experimental test number 21 are very aggressive, you need to lock them in as soon as possible and prevent them from escaping again. All of you, get to it! Don’t you bother about the surveillance room, when the new in-charge arrives and the equipment is fixed it’ll be fine.”
They nodded and quickly got to work.
Xia Ling was still shivering under the tree. She tried to wheel herself to a safer place, but the snow had piled up and her wheelchair was now partially buried in it. She staggered to her feet, but her vision was blurry from the freezing temperatures. After taking just a few steps, she fell onto the snow.
Li Lei...
She reached her hand out as if wanting to grab onto something. She had only one thought, “I can’t die... I still have to look for Wei Lingnan... to save Li Lei...”
In her daze—and she didn’t know if it was a delusion—a tall man approached her.
He was dressed in white from head to toe, his outfit swaying in the wind. His expression was a little cold as he bent over to pick her up. “Are you courting death?” His voice was calm and clear. “Is it worth doing this just for a person who signed a master-servant agreement with you?”
