A small beeping sound echoed in the dark room. Soon the lights in the room lit up automatically, illuminating the young man who was sleeping hazardously on the bed. As if sensing the right fluorescent light, the young man frowned and rolled over hiding his head between the pillows.
['Time 6 am. Occupants please wake up and start the morning starching,'] a mechanical voice loudly announced in the room.
The young man groaned loudly and gazed up at the speaker with a glare. "Every single day…" Grumbling, he adjusted the neck collar and the small bracelet on his wrist with a glare. he rolled out of bed and started to do basic stretches.
If he did not comply with the rules, he might get a small shock from his monitor.
Rolling his eyes, he started to work out. his pale grey eyes fell on the huge glass window in his room. It was a lunar cycle so he was able to get a good look at the huge blue planet which looked like it was just within his reach.
He fixedly peered at it. this view was only possible once every 27 days. immersed in the daydream as he continued to work out.
Soon after he finished his work out a small alarm rang and a slit opened in the wall with his breakfast.
Skyy cheerfully bound to it and picked up the plate.
But with one glance at his day's meal his smile fell.
It was dull grey porridge again along with fifty or so pills.
Sighing, he ate the slightly cold meal and swallowed all the pills with gusto. This day marked the 27th circle of the lunar settlement around Earth. That also meant was his free day. He could roam around the hallways and meet his friends.
Skyy smiled brightly gazing at the huge metal door. 'Wonder what Kyle's doing? I hope he tells me one of his world stories again,' he enthusiastically ran around the room.
But soon his happiness came to an end.
The sound of loud footsteps echoed as it moved closer and closer to the hallway with rows of rooms on either side.
Hearing the dreadful sound Skyy hurriedly jumped into the bed hugging the blanket tightly. his heart was pounding in his chest as the footsteps reached close to his room and slowed down.
'don't stop… not me. I don't want to be chosen.' He prayed in his mind with his eyes tightly closed.
The dreadful sounds of keys jingled loudly.
Skyy felt his heart drop.
'it's over. His life was over…'
He knew this day was bound to happen. he was at the ripe age of eighteen, the perfect time to be chosen. Naively he thought he would be able to spend a few more years here in peace.
Tears rolled down uncontrollably as he awaited the most dreadful event of his life.
But the sound of the door opening was heard quite close but far at the same time.
Skyy glanced back hesitantly. His door was firmly closed.
'it's not me... oh thank god.' He curiously ran to the door and glanced out through the small glass opening.
The person opposite to him was chosen.
He hid while he watched the guards unlock the various locks on the door.
"PW56 please step out." the two guards said sternly.
The young man dressed in soft white pajamas stepped out with his head lowered. "You have been assigned to meet your client today. Please follow us,"
The young man broke into sibs. "Please... this is the second time. I don't want to. Please… I'm still in pain." He toppled to the ground holding his stomach and sobbing.
The guards did not even blink. they attached a chain to his collar and to his wrist monitor and started to drag him down the hallway.
"NO!!! PLEASE!!
"I DON'T WANT TO!!!!"
"AHHHHHHHHH!"
The young man's screams echoed in the empty hallway creating an eerie atmosphere.
Skyy touched his pounding heart with a frown. His tear-filled eyes fell on the empty room opposite him. "They have started to choose amongst the fifth generation. No… soon... soon it will be my turn."
He crumbled to the ground holding his head.
'I need to leave….'
Skyy ran to the window clinging to it in desperation. 'I need to run away like pw34. I need to get out of here.'
As he was despairing in his own situation the door behind him opened automatically.
the inhabitants of the rooms close to him all walked out in a robotic way with black expressions on their faces.
but Skyy could see a few tear-stained men who were trying to hold back their tears.
Sky sniffled and followed the line to the hall where everyone gathered.
Everyone where silent as they sat down in a few seats close to the huge glass windows.
Skyy hopped on his feet trying to get a glimpse of his best friend in the crowd. The patch of red hair stood out in the crowd. "Kyle." He ran to him.
"Thank God. You didn't get chosen," Kyle ran to him and hugged him tightly. "I heard the sound close to your room and I thought... thought you were chosen."
"no... I was so scared…" he sobbed loudly clinging to his shoulders.
"Shh. They are watching," Kyle pulled him to a corner where the camera did not face. they both sat down on the ground gazing at each other. "He was in the 5th gen, right?
"Hmm PW53, they are starting to choose from my group. Kyle, what will I do if they choose me? I... I don't want to get…." He gazed at the other corner where a group of huge pot-bellied men stood together and chatted softly. They all had slim built but their tummies were swollen and impossibly big. "I don't want to get pregnant."
Kyle gritted his teeth. "Fuck this… I just want to kill them all," he gazed at the ground with a deep glare. "Do you think they will let us go if I tear that organ out,"
They were all 'special' men born with a womb. They called them the prototype woman. Pw for short. Their DNA was altered at birth making them such. This also gave them the ability to give birth. But that did not mean anything good.
From birth, they were captured and trapped in this lunar prison. There was no way out.
Skyy froze. "don't know. PW13 tried it and failed. He was put into permanent confinement. I heard he went crazy. I don't want that to happen to you. Let's… let's escape this place."
"that's close to impossible buddy," Kyle grumbled peering out the window at the huge blue planet. "it's a hopeless thought,"
Because escape was impossible.
They were currently in the lunar object nicknamed 'the moon' revolving around the earth. if they somehow managed to make a run to the door and got it unlocked, they would still need an oxygen suit to survive. Even by a stroke of luck, they found an oxygen suit where could he go?
This was the only human camp in the lunar poles. they could not run anywhere.
What awaited him outside was imminent death.
they were completely trapped.
