The day passed much faster than they had expected. At eight, they were ordered to return to their rooms by a mechanical voice.
Skyy leaned close to Kyle. "I pray that they have a maintenance day soon," he mumbled ever so softly to his ear. "I'll miss you,"
They were allowed to roam free only once every 27 days, but on maintenance day, they were all freed to check the safety features of their rooms. It was like a rare holiday for them. the maintenance team checks the floor every three months or so. this month it was likely they will have one.
Kyle gently pinched his cheeks. "Yeah, I'll miss you, don't get sick. Exercise well okay,"
Skyy nodded.
But as his best friend was about to leave, he grabbed his hand tightly. "Wait,"
Kyle confusedly looked his way. "The third alarm is going to ring. We have to leave Skyy."
"Here," he shoved a small CD player in his arms. "I loaned it from the library. I saw you looking at it... and I heard this album sounds good." he cast a small smile his way. "I hope.... I hope it cheers you up,"
His best friend wordlessly hugged him tightly. "we'll meet soon. Until then." With a small smile, Kyle ran towards his hall. His room was just a few hallways away from him in section C.
Skyy returned to his room with three books in his embrace. The two were history and the maps of Earth. The next was that mysterious black leather-bound book.
He didn't have the chance to open it yet and his curiosity was killing him.
Without wasting a second, he threw open the book and looked in. To his surprise, it was only filled with empty pages.
He filled through one page to the next, hoping to see at least a small text, but he found nothing.
"I just borrowed an empty book. this sucks." Pouting, he flipped the book quickly. Suddenly, a small piece of paper fell out of it.
"Ohh what is this..." he cheerfully picked it up from the floor and held it close.
It was an old, worn-out photo. Two men were seen standing close and their faces were completely rubbed off with the passing of time.
"This looks old." he flipped it around. a small date was written. "September 2040,"
"2040?! How did one get in here?"
'is this book that old?' he gazed at the leather binding curiously. A small marking was found at the bottom right corner. "S.C"
"s.c? What is it? A code name?" his curiosity was killing him.
But there was no one to give him any answers. He rolled over onto his stomach with the photo close to his face.
The two men wore rough patchy red and black shirts. The tallest of the men had his arms around the shorter man. it looked… intimate.
"They look lovely. Are they a pair of lovers?"
he started to imagine a wild romantic story that happened a thousand hundred years ago.
"How did you guys meet? How did it feel to have someone who supports you and loves you…." he gently touched the shorter man's ruined face. "I wish I had your fate… I want to live and love as I wish… but I don't have that luxury."
"I'm happy for you guys," he stuffed the delicate picture back into the notebook and safely stored it on his shelf.
The books borrowed from the library can be returned or kept if the user wishes to.
He had no plans to return such an ancient, precious book.
Days went by fast. He spent it exercising and reading the books he had borrowed. Ancient history was the one that kept him occupied most of his time. The book talked about the past events.
This also explained how people with powers came into existence.
'What about prototype women? When were they created?'
Skyy flipped through the glossary to find the topic. It was in the last few pages. There were a few pictures of ancient medical records of a man giving birth. He touched the shiny page with a frown.
'the first prototype women exited a thousand years ago?...' he curiously gazed at the attached images. The name of the patient was blurred, but the report said the man gave birth to a pair of twins. Soon many other prototype women started to appear around the world.
'Wonder how they were treated? Were they captured and kept in cages like us?'
Strangely, the prototype women of the past were treated so well. Since the female population had reduced drastically, the prototype women were considered precious. They were protected and they actually had much more powerful abilities than the surviving human population. So they took control of the human population.
The ancient prototype women were national leaders.
'What changed! How did we get to this stage?!' he continued reading.
the situation took a big turn in 2041.
The book did not explain what happened. The prototype women started to grow less in number and soon they went extinct.
Skyy gasped. "How... how do we exit then…"
thousand years later, the first DNA sample of prototype women was found when mankind was in a desperation to solve the declining birth rate. The DNA was synthesized and a human clone was born.
The first prototype woman, PW1.
Soon, many other clones were made.
research showed that prototype women can actually give birth to much more powerful ability users, thus their fate was doomed.
Skyy clutched the book tightly. "They unearthed us... and made us their slaves…"
An unknown anger rose up his body. he felt his blood surge. A weighted feeling pulled down his body.
His heart pounded loudly, and he felt breathless.
Skyy snapped the book close. "what's the use in thinking about this?"
The strange feeling disappeared immediately.
"let's not think of useless things…" he shot up and started to exercise to relieve his stress.
Unknown to him the black leather-bound book flipped open and a small entry appeared. [' the year 2040, I appeared on earth.']
