"Here gently place him here," the doctor's hurriedly shouted, pushing a stretcher to her.
Tian gently placed Yue on the bed and tucked his hands in without touching his gauze-wrapped hand. "he was badly electrocuted! His hands are burned and his heart.. stopped. I did CPR and his heart rate is back to normal." She briefed them.
The doctor looked up at her, surprised. "How did he get electrocuted?"
"S-solar panels. He was fixing them. Please. Please take a look at him," she whispered, wiping the sweat off her brows.
The doctor doubtfully nodded and rolled Yue into the ward.
A few minutes later, the car zoomed in the barrack and Fan Xui was wheeled in. Juda rode along with him.
"How is he? Is he okay?"
"Yeah, his vitals are normal..." Juda weirdly looked at Fan Xui. "It's very weird...."
Fan Xui too was wheeled into the ward.
Tian and Juda quickly cleaned themselves up and dressed in sterilized clothes before entering the ward.
Fifty beds were lined up pretty close to each other. Since this was a military barrack there was a hospital facility inside but the only problem was the facility was very small.
It could accompany only about fifty patients maximum.
For now, all the beds were full of soldiers infected with the zombie virus. All of them were chained tightly to their bed in case they hurt anyone else.
Yue and Fan were treated right on the stretcher as is.
Tian watched as they hooked them up with heart monitors and many other devices.
They even injected Yue a few times. As for Fan Xui, they checked him and the doctor cleared him as normal.
Only Yue was in the worst situation.
After a long time of struggle, his pulse rate stabilized. The doctors went back to take care of other patients while Tian stayed back with Yue and Fan Xui.
"Juda, I need burn cream and gauze," she whispered, calling her lover who was busy running about.
"I'll bring it,"
Gently, Tian removed the bandage around his arm. His skin was burned black and it was wrinkling up. It looked like a second-degree burn. In her profession, she had received a lot of burns like this. It would not have much of an effect if it was in a part of the body with a lot of skin but since it was his hands that had more nerve endings there is a high possibility that Yue might suffer from nerves tightening.
Her eyes fogged up with tears. She shook her head and steadied her heart while bandaging his hands.
"Tian. H-how is he.. is he okay?.." Hary gently tapped on her shoulders.
"Hary..." she hugged him tightly. "He barely survived... he barely survived.. He was not breathing Hary. He... he was not breathing.." she sobs she had been holding in burst out. "it was so scary...."
"shh... he is okay now. Don't cry.. shhh..." Hary hugged her close peering at Yue with an unknown look.
"How is Fan?"
"He is good, I think..." Tian glanced to the nearby bed. Fan Xui looked like he was sleeping peacefully. If she had not seen how badly he was convulsing on the ground, she would have not felt an ounce of pity for him.
But the poor guy looked like he was suffering.
"I don't know what went wrong. I sent Yue to talk to him and suddenly I saw flashes of light from his window. Electricity was passing around everywhere Hary... It's like his body is going out of control...." she whispered softly to him. "w-what if... what if one day I might lose control too.... what if I burst into a ball of flame?,"
Hary's hold slightly tightened, "it won't happen and I won't let it happen. So don't think of it."
Yue's family came around to check on him. Yue's dad even brought their house pet Trexa with him and left it beside Yue.
They waited and waited.. Yue did not wake up. After nine, no civilians were allowed to stay in the barrack so they were requested to leave.
Yue's dad and mum looked very reluctant about that idea.
Tian assured them that she will take care of him, so did Juda.
Only after that did they agree to leave with tear-stained faces.
Tian pulled Hary down a little. "Go escort them home and stay with them. They got attacked today,"
Hary worriedly looked around. Not many people were in the barracks. "I thought I will stay here. It's not safe for Yue and Fan...."
"I am here exactly for that reason," she whispered.
Sighing Hary nodded. "Take care, just shoot anyone who bothers you,"
"Hmm..."
Nighttime came by very quickly. Everyone retired to their rooms. While Tian and Juda stayed behind in the ward taking care of Yue and Fan.
There was only one other doctor and a nurse on rotation taking care of the patients in there.
Small sounds of growl started echoing in the long ward followed by the sound of the doctors running to them.
The people in here were all infected.
If it was the usual situation the surviving people would have panicked and killed the infected to prevent the spread of the virus.
But as per Yue's information, not all infected would turn to zombies.
So his uncle decided to form a new rule. Anyone newly scratched and bitten will be admitted to the ward for observation. If after a few days if there are no visible symptoms they can be sent home.
Tian glanced around. The growls multiple exponentially at night..
The chilling sound of chains clanging on the bed made the future seem too bleak.
Not many survived after the infection. Only eight percent of the human infected by the bite survived. The rest.... turned to the undead.
Subtly, she scratched the mark on her legs. Her pants were soaking wet with blood.
"oh my god! When did you get hurt!" Juda squatted down and glanced at her wound. The stab wound was superficial. The knife did not hit any bones or tear any veins. She hurriedly stitched the wounds and bandaged up.
Juda then curiously looked at her shin. "When did you get hurt there?"
"I got bit..." Tian whispered. "But Yue saved me... back then I didn't even know he was my brother. I just thought he was a doppelgänger set up by my maternal grandfather. I.. I almost killed him. But this kid... he stayed back and took care of me day and night." Tears welled up unknowingly.
She wiped them away. "My heart is still beating so fast Juda... I almost lost him. if I was just a few minutes late he would have left us all..."
"I was that close to losing him."
Juda hugged her close. "Tian, will you separate Yue from Fan?"
Tian snorted... "As if I can separate Yue from him. I will be slightly more observant. If Fan Xui is really unable to control his powers, he might have to take some time away and train until he gets full control of it. Then they can meet,"
Juda suddenly kissed her lips. "You have matured my dear,"
Blushing, Tian gasped. "I am always mature,"
"Yeah right? Weren't you the one who said, no one deserves my brother. Fan Xui is bad. He stole him from me," she mocked in a weird tone.
Tian just sighed. "I still am childish, but who am I to stand in front of my brother's happiness. He deserves the world."
*******
The sound of shots being fired woke Yue up. Startled, he glanced around.
Someone tightly held his hands. "Hey hey.. It's okay. You are okay," Tian soothingly whispered.
Through blurry eyes, he glanced up at her. "Tian... Fan.... Fan..."
"He is next to you see,"
Yue glanced to the side. In a stretcher next to him, Fan Xui laid there unmoving. The heart rate monitor attached to him was beeping normally.
"He.. Okay?"
"Yes, he is okay. There is nothing wrong with him..." Tian assured him softly. "Now sleep, your body needs rest," she manually closed his eyes.
Yue shook his head. "Don't want to... i..."
"Shh... go to sleep." Tian gently tapped his body humming a soothing tune.
"N..no..."
"Here, hug your Trexa," Tian moved the sleeping rat close to his face. "See she is also taking a good nap. You should too,"
Yue suddenly chuckled. "I'm not... a kid.."
"I know, but you are a kid to me." she pulled the sheets over his neck and tucked him in securely. "It gets cold at night, don't thrash around and sleep. I will be here. I will watch you and your Fan,"
Yue's eyes started to drift close.
Only after he started breathing evenly did Tian let out a sigh of relief. "Is there a way to move them to a separate ward.. it's loud here. Yue won't be able to get good sleep,"
"I would very much love to move him up to Hary's room. But without electricity, we won't be able to connect the equipments,"
Tian nodded. In Yue's home, there was always light, so she didn't even realize it until now. After the meteor crashed the whole world lost electricity. The lines were down and the underground lines were also somehow faulty. No one had lights.
Only the ones with solar-powered sheets were able to survive.
The barrack had a few attached to the sides and the roof but it only powered a few rooms like the canteen, emergency ward, air vent and passageways.
The night went by so fast. The next day by daybreak Yue's parents came by right when the barrack gates opened with food and refreshments.
They stayed by his bedside all day.
Yue did not wake up nor did Fan Xui.
