Chapter 8
After eating most of the steamed bun, she felt some strength returning. She struggled to get up, leaning on the table to support herself with her upper body. Unable to pour water, she could only lean down to drink what was left in the cup.
Feeling a little better, she slowly tried to move her legs back so she could lie down. Too weak, she collapsed on the ground again, sending a stab of pain through the wound on her back.
She gritted her teeth to endure it before crawling over to find the medicine box. Though she couldn't see, she remembered where the anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing medicines were placed.
Unable to inject herself, she could only take heavier doses orally.
After about half an hour, she groped for some vitamins and swallowed a few without water. The sourness made her want to pound the floor.
After taking the medicine, she curled up panting on the ground. Since leaving her mother's womb, she had never suffered such physical torment. The caning this time made her realize this era was very different from the one she had lived in - those of high status and power held the authority over life and death.
Her life was in King Chu's hands.
She had to adapt to this harsh environment.
She wondered how the child was doing. Though the pus was drained from the wound, it wouldn't heal without medicine.
In the short courtyard, Brother Huo's fever rose again after taking the medicine.
Qi Amah was frantic. He had been so much better during the day, so why did the high fever return at night?
Lv Ya was also anxious. "Should I go ask Doctor Li to come again?"
Seeing her grandson burning up and breathing with difficulty, and remembering Doctor Li's fee of five taels of silver for two doses of medicine, Qi Amah despaired, "It's useless, useless."
Lv Ya cried anxiously, "What should we do? Are we going to just watch Brother Huo..." She couldn't bear to say the last word.
Qi Amah gritted her teeth, her eyes flashing with grief and anger. "If anything happens to Brother Huo, even if I have to stake this life, I will kill that woman!"
Brother Huo was her only grandson left. If anything happened to him, she would have no reason to live.
That woman was the queen and Chilling's true daughter. Killing her would certainly cost her own life, but she didn't care anymore.
Hearing this, Brother Huo slowly woke up.
He opened his eyes, his cheeks flushed from the burning fever. The sensible little boy spoke hoarsely with tears, "Grandma, I'm fine."
Qi Amah wept as she stroked his face with her rough hands. Through gritted teeth, she said, "Don't worry, grandma will definitely avenge you. I won't let Yuan get away with this."
Brother Huo looked confused. With some effort, he spoke, "The queen... treated me. The queen is good."
Lv Ya was taken aback. "Is Brother Huo delirious? Why is he speaking nonsense?"
Brother Huo became anxious. "The queen drained my pus and said I would get better after draining the pus and taking medicine. She also stroked my head and said I would be alright."
After speaking, he collapsed onto the bed, breathing heavily.
Qi Amah stood up in surprise. "Really? Wasn't she trying to harm you?"
"Didn't harm me..." Brother Huo's remaining eye looked somewhat blurred and out of focus. He reached out a hand. "Grandma, I'm so cold."
His whole body trembled as he breathed with his mouth. Only the exhaled air could be seen, not the inhaled.
"Lv Ya, watch Brother Huo. I'm going to ask the queen to come." Qi Amah immediately rushed out holding a lantern.
Qi Amah ran to Feng Yi Palace and pushed open the door. The lantern illuminated Yuan Qingling sprawled on the ground, looking utterly miserable.
The room was left in chaos and mess ever since that day, with no one having come in to clean up.
