Mu Chenyan swaggered to the thirteenth floor and knocked on a particular door before opening it. "Dr. Cai, do you have a minute?"
Dr. Cai moved her eyes from the computer screen and seeing Mu Chenyan her brows quirked up a little. "Am I seeing things? Or is this really Miss Mu Chenyan herself?"
"No need to look so surprised," said Mu Chenyan. "We can catch up later. How about you do me a favor for now?"
"Of course, people don't come to the temple without a reason," said Dr. Cai in a strange tone. "What can I help you with?"
"You have a patient named Xia Songbei?"
Dr. Cai nodded her head. She remembered this patient very well. "I do have this patient. He just came in because of a stroke. His condition was critical when he was brought in. He is stable for now but he hasn't gained consciousness yet which means that he is still in danger. But why are you asking about him? What's your relationship?"
"Tsk. Such a poor code of conduct. How can you give me the details of your patient without knowing who he is to me? This can put your career in danger, you know," said Mu Chenyan.
Dr. Cai crossed her arms in front of her chest and stared at Mu Chenyan, "I wouldn't answer just anyone. But it's you who asked and you are not someone who would ask useless questions. Besides, even if I don't tell you anything, you can take out all the patient information from the database. Who can stop the boss around here, right?"
"True," Mu Chenyan nodded her head. "Anyway, that patient is very important to me. Until a few hours ago, he was a dear uncle and now, he is my father-in-law as well."
Dr. Cai was taking a sip of the coffee and ended up spurting it out when she heard Mu Chenyan's words. "What? What did you just say? You? Did you get married? Who is so blind?"
"That would be me," Xia Zhao took a step over to enter her office and said hello.
Dr. Cai looked at this handsome face and then looked at Mu Chenyan's face, "So, you accept that you are blind?"
"I've heard that everyone in love is blind," answered Xia Zhao. "So, I don't see a problem here."
"I feel old," said Dr. Cai. "I haven't heard something like this in a long while."
"Your marriage must have lost the spark by now," commented Mu Chenyan.
"You can shut up, Chenyan!" said Dr. Cai. "Don't look for a fight here. I don't think it's necessary."
"Okay. Then do me a favor."
"What is it?"
"Call patient Xia Songbei's family members to your office and give them a long detail about the condition of the patient. Long enough to make it last minimum thirty minutes," said Mu Chenyan.
"What are you up to?" asked Dr. Cai.
"I don't have good feelings for my newly minted mother-in-law. Considering how you have had a long struggle with your own mother-in-law, I believe understand my feelings. Don't you?"
Dr. Cai rubbed her chin and agreed, "Sure. It's not a big deal. I can do this much for you."
"Thank you! I'll invite you over dinner some day to repay this favor!"
"There is no need for that," Dr. Cai waved off her hand. "I'm happy to be of help to you."
"You don't mean that."
"You bet I don't!" was Dr. Cai's response. "But considering we have been classmates once, I'll still do this favor for you."
"Thanks again!" With that Mu Chenyan out of there. "See? It was that easy."
Xia Zhao patted her head saying, "My Yanzi is as awesome as always."
"Of course, I am!"
Both of them stood in a corner keeping an eye on the ward door of Xia Songbei. Soon a nurse went in and then Xia Hao and his mother followed the nurse out. Xia Hao still looked a bit confused and a bit anxious because when he heard that the doctor had something to discuss with them about his father's condition, he felt like something was wrong with his dad.
Seeing that they left, Xia Zhao and Mu Chenyan entered the ward easily. "This indeed felt like an undercover operation," said Mu Chenyan. "But it wasn't challenging enough." Saying that she walked up to the end of the bed and looked at the patient file. She opened it to read through it while Xia Zhao looked at his father who was still unconscious and looked so pale and frail at the moment. "Uncle's condition is similar to what his doctor just said. Something stimulated him which resulted into this stroke. His over all physical health is pretty bad. You didn't notice?"
Xia Zhao nodded in response, "I did notice. But whenever I talk to him about his health or even bring up this topic, he always says that he knows. He knows his body better and everything is fine with him. I even tried to take him for a health check-up but he shook me off. In the end, we had a big argument and didn't talk to each other for months."
"I did not think you'd do something this childish. Aren't you always steady and mature?"
"It's not my fault," Xia Zhao defended himself at the moment in front of his wife. "It's all him. He always makes me mad."
"I thought only I did that," said Mu Chenyan.
"In your case, whatever you do, I don't get mad. I always just found it cute. But it's not the same with him." He went silent for a while and sighed, "Maybe I should have been a bit more stubborn with him."
"What's the point of regretting it now?" asked Mu Chenyan. "The doctors have done their best already. Now, all you can hope for is that his will to live is strong enough or else, he might not even get through this night."
Xia Zhao looked up at her.
"I'm serious. You can see it for yourself. All his tests are pointing towards this result. I know it's difficult to accept but it's the truth. I'm just letting you know so that you can be prepared for everything."
Xia Zhao took the file from her hands and read through it carefully. The more he read, the more his expression turned serious. It was exactly what she said just now. On the other hand, Mu Chenyan pulled a stool and sat next to the bed. She poked Xia Songbei's cheek saying, "Uncle, you can't sleep like this. Not today. This is an important day. I just got married. If I remember it right, you told me once that the day I got married, you'd give me a huge present. I'm still waiting for that."
Xia Zhao looked at her and didn't stop her from annoying his father.
"You said if Zhao bullied me, you'd fight him for me. How are you gonna do it lying here? This is really not good. You can't leave me so soon."
"You really don't even let me sleep," came a weak and hoarse voice.
Mu Chenyan bit her lips and smiled sheepishly, "Did I disturb you?"
Xia Songbei opened his eyes slightly at looked at her face, "What do you think?"
"I won't say it wasn't my intention because honestly, disturbing you was truly my intention right now," said Mu Chenyan. "But I can give you an apology. Do you want it?"
Xia Songbei wanted to move his hand but felt pain coursing through all his body which made him hiss.
"Don't move. Don't try to be brave too. You're still a patient whose condition isn't looking too good. I never thought you would be so careless with your health."
"I wasn't lucky enough like Brother Tian. I didn't have a daughter like you to take care of my health."
"That's right. Not everyone is that fortunate," said Mu Chenyan. "Do you want some water?"
"Yes, please!"
Mu Chenyan helped him get some warm water and fed it to him with a straw. Xia Songbei felt better after drinking some water and then looked at his eldest son who was just standing there looking at the two of them.
"You scared me. I thought you won't wake up," said Mu Chenyan.
"With you buzzing in my ear. How can I not wake up?"
"I'm not a bee. How can I buzz?" she argued.
"But you're always busy like a bee," said Xia Songbei.
"Oh, I never thought about this. I'm certainly a model busy bee. Doesn't sound all that bad."
"It sounds bad to me," said Xia Zhao. "A bee works during her short life every minute to make just a half spoonful of honey and then it dies. Very short life span. Doesn't sound good anymore, does it, Yanzi?"
"Uhh... Well, if you look at it this way, it really doesn't sound good."
Xia Songbei laughed a little but couldn't continue because of the pain. "Don't make me laugh right now. It's difficult to even breathe right now."
