Chapter - 51
"Mrs Rutherford?" Margaret was in a cold sweat as soon as she heard the voice. She took the phone off her ear and nervously looked at the caller ID. On the screen, in big letters, it showed 'Mom,' with a heart sign.
"Margaret? Why is Alex's phone with you? Where is he?" Martha inquired from the other end of the call. Her motherly instincts kicked in, and her imagination began to run wild.
"He is here, at my house". Margaret replied meekly, cursing her fate. There could not be anyone worse on the other side of the phone.
"What is he doing there? And with what thing is he so busy that he cannot even answer his mother's call?" Martha asked suspiciously. Every mother is on the edge when it comes to their innocent sons. They are wary of every vixen trying to seduce their cub and take them away from the den.
"Umm... About that... Mrs Rutherford, you see... I picked up his phone... Well because... You know... Why did I pick up his phone? Yeah, you see, he was in the washroom, but he is out now. Let me put him on the phone," Margaret stammered as she thought of an excuse and handed the phone to Alex.
Alex didn't know what the big deal was for Margaret to lie to Martha. His mother was chill, "Hi, mom, What's up? Is there something the matter?" Alex asked as he answered the phone.
"What are you doing at Margaret's house?" Instead of replying to him, Martha asked her own question.
"You know Karen? My boss? She let me have an early day today. Then I met Miss Cole while doing my groceries," Alex said and looked at Margaret for a reaction, but Margaret didn't seem to notice the way he addressed her, "One thing lead to another, and she invited me over for some tea. And since no was home, I took her up on that offer. What's up? Why did you call?" Alex explained to her.
"I am also back early, and when I saw the grocery in the kitchen, I looked for you, but you were nowhere to be found. So I decided to give you a call," Martha said.
Martha was not feeling that well, so she decided to head back earlier than usual and rest. She decided to surprise everyone with a meal after resting for a while, but to her surprise, Alex was already back home. She called out for him and looked around, but she could not get a response. Even Mrs Flores had left early without preparing the meal. Sometimes even Martha could not comprehend why they were even keeping Mrs Flores for.
Hearing Martha, Alex stood up straight, "Oh... you are back! Wait a minute, I will be there in a jiffy," Alex said and hung up the phone.
"Wait... Alex... Listen to me... Hello...Hello... Alex!" Martha wanted to say something, but on the other side, Alex had already hung up. Martha wanted to say that there was no need to come back so soon. Since George felt that Margaret deserved a chance and even Martha had no issues with her, Martha thought there was no problem in them spending some time together.
'That idiotic son of mine. How long will he be a mama's boy?' Martha thought to herself, but somewhere in her heart, she was pleased that Alex decided to come home. It showed that even in front of a beauty like Margaret, Alex prioritized them.

In Margaret's house
"Sorry, I have to leave now. Let's get together some other time," Alex apologised to Margaret and got up to leave.
"I understand. Then I won't be seeing you out, bye," disheartened Margaret replied. They were finally alone after so long, yet everything was ruined. She had so many things to clear with Alex and so many questions she wanted to be answered, but earlier his colleagues interrupted the conversation, and finally, Martha hit the nail on the coffin with her call. Margaret knew that such a splendid opportunity was hard to come but... but she could do nothing but curse her fate.
"Bye," Alex said and made his way out of the house.
When Alex walked past the kitchen, he saw the leftovers Margaret had forced into the garbage can. He didn't pay much attention to them earlier because he was busy admiring the house, but now that he saw it, Alex thought of something as he walked out of the house.
Margaret, on the other hand, crashed on the sofa, cursing her fate, the moment Alex walked out of her house. It was such a golden opportunity, and it slipped right through her hands.
She looked up to the ceiling and couldn't help but ask God, 'Are you really going to be like this?'

"Is this all?" George asked, handing over the file to the guy standing in front of him.
"Yes, sir. This was the last one," the young man replied respectfully.
Nodding his head, George took off his glasses and rubbed his eyes. He was dead tired from all the work he had to do. This was the cue for the young man to leave. He gave a slight bow to George and walked out of the room, closing the door behind.
Not long after the young man left, there was a knock at the door.
Wearing his glasses and straightening up, George said, "Come in."
The door opened, and someone walked in.
Seeing the person who just walked in, George smiled, "The usual, please."
