The blood demon had been defeated, bringing relief to the crowd.
Su Xin turned around and began to ask Xu Ziqing, “Fellow Daoist Xu, this individual appears ethereal and non-human. I wonder…”
Before he could finish his sentence, the white figure in front of him shifted, causing his mind to go blank momentarily.
Xu Ziqing was perplexed as he watched his friend’s body tremble in front of Su Xin, and Yun Lie extended a finger to tap between Su Xin’s eyebrows. Then Yun Lie shifted again and returned to his storage ring.
At that moment, Su Xin frowned slightly, his gaze becoming unfocused. He looked at Jiao Tu’s lifeless body and remarked, “The blood demon has been slain, so our journey here was not in vain.”
Xu Ziqing was taken aback. It was evident that Su Xin had forgotten about Yun Lie’s presence. Xu Ziqing smiled and replied, “It was thanks to both of us, Fellow Daoist Su, that we managed to succeed.”
Su Xin also felt a sense of pride. “Fellow Daoist Xu’s profound cultivation is truly admirable.”
After exchanging a few words, Xu Ziqing approached the Dong brothers. When he saw Dong Lixi’s dazed expression, his tone softened, “Your Highness, the evil demon has been vanquished, but you still need to make a decision regarding what comes next.”
Dong Lixi opened his eyes again, reverting to his dignified and composed self as the Crown Prince of the Chenghuang Kingdom. He expressed his gratitude, saying, “I am grateful for the assistance of the two immortal masters.”
Xu Ziqing inwardly shook his head, then turned to look at Su Xin and asked, “Fellow Daoist Su, what are your thoughts?”
Su Xin was about to frown but suddenly his eyes sparkled with a mischievous gleam. “Let’s save face for this prince. Fellow Daoist Xu, the situation is urgent, and we have united our efforts to eliminate the demon. However, at this moment, we can take the opportunity to talk and get to know each other better.”
Xu Ziqing sighed inwardly. Su Xin was straightforward, and although his temper could be fiery, he wasn’t deceitful. Overall, Xu Ziqing’s impression of him was not bad. However, now that Su Xin was restraining his temper, Xu Ziqing couldn’t discern his true thoughts… It was always a problem.
Nevertheless, he couldn’t decline the generous offer, so he nodded and said, “In that case, Fellow Daoist Su, please lead the way.”
The most recent and important matter was that it was no longer a problem.
When Dong Lixi noticed they had finished their conversation, he instructed Dong Lizhao, “Zhao, take the two Immortal Masters to have a seat for a while, and then come and assist me once they have settled.”
Dong Lizhao, initially concerned about his brother’s severe injuries, understood the situation and replied, “Yes, Zhao will go.” He went to guide the two cultivators, hoping that by acting swiftly, he could return to assist his brother as soon as possible.
Xu Ziqing and Su Xin followed Dong Lizhao, while Dong Lixi slowly approached Jiao Tu’s lifeless body and gazed at it with steadiness.
After a long moment, he softly smiled, “I will forever remember the friendship my brother Jiao showed me. I was foolish not to realize your true feelings for me, but now that I do, I can’t help but…”
After standing in silence for a while, Dong Lixi retrieved a dagger from his waist and began to dig a hole in the ground beneath the upturned tree in the courtyard. He meticulously dug, one handful at a time, for an unknown length of time.
Finally, he stood up and returned to Jiao Tu’s corpse. Despite the gruesome nature of his demise, Dong Lixi didn’t seem to mind as he reached out and lifted him up. The pain pierced through his heart, but he placed Jiao Tu’s body into the pit as if unaware of the agony. Gradually, he filled the hole with dirt, handful by handful.
Once the pit was filled, Dong Lizhao returned. Concern filled his voice as he observed his brother’s desolate state. “Brother, are you…”
Dong Lixi responded with melancholy, “He has endured so much for my sake, and I am well aware of his character. I have no doubts.”
Dong Lizhao quickly interjected, “It’s all because of those wicked cultivators. Big brother, you were kept in the dark.”
Dong Lixi smiled faintly and shook his head. “Even if there were more reasons, I still let him down.”
Dong Lizhao smiled sadly and spoke up, “Brother, General Jiao willingly sacrificed himself. If his spirit were still alive, he wouldn’t want to see you like this…”
Dong Lixi smiled in understanding. “I comprehend what you’re saying, Zhao.”
However, even with that understanding, he couldn’t help but dwell on it.
In the past, he and Jiao Tu had been close friends. He had believed that if one of them ascended to the throne, the other would protect the country on his behalf. Together, they would make the Chenghuang Kingdom prosperous and ensure the happiness of its people.
But now, everything had changed after this calamity…
The first time he saw the man, he felt a twinge of sadness.
Though he himself had endured hardships in the heavenly prison, he knew that Jiao Tu’s struggle to protect his brother’s life from the wicked cultivators had been even more arduous. The country of Chenghuang had been saved, yet Jiao Tu was denied even a proper burial.
He couldn’t even be certain… if General Jiao’s soul had truly been preserved.
As members of the royal family, they couldn’t divulge the details of the immortal and demonic matters to the nation. They had to keep it concealed.
The tombstone was placed in the earthen grave, bearing the simple inscription “Dong Lixi weeps,” and nothing more.
At first sight, one might think it was an ordinary tombstone. To the outside world, they would proclaim…
He closed his eyes and spoke, “Jiao Tu was treacherous, forcefully holding the Crown Prince captive in an attempt to seize the throne. However, divine justice has… brought about his demise.”
Dong Lizhao accepted the token and bowed, saying, “…my brother’s orders will be followed.”
Dong Lixi arranged a banquet to entertain the two cultivators. He couldn’t join them as he was occupied with state affairs and needed to gather his men. The two were quite different in their preferences. Su Xin didn’t particularly enjoy interacting with people from the southern regions, so he was content with the arrangement.
At the banquet, it was only Su Xin and Xu Ziqing present.
Su Xin poured himself a glass of wine, brought it to his lips, and raised an eyebrow as he remarked, “Mortal wine is just mortal wine. Though it may be fiery, it lacks spiritual energy and taste.”
Knowing that Su Xin had initiated the conversation, Xu Ziqing smiled and replied, “Indeed, the wine from the Upper Nine Continents is superior.”
Su Xin, with his beautiful countenance, downed the wine in one gulp, yet his expression remained unchanged. “That’s true.” He placed the wine glass down and came straight to the point, saying, “Fellow Daoist Xu, we have joined forces against our enemies, and I’ve noticed your high level of cultivation. May I ask which sect and family you belong to?” After pondering for a moment, he ventured a guess, “Could it be that your surname, Xu, signifies your affiliation with the Xu family from the Upper Qu Continent?”
Xu Ziqing was taken aback and shook his head, “I happen to have the surname Xu, but I have no connection with the Xu family of Upper Quzhou.”
Observing that Su Xin’s expression remained unchanged, Su Xin pondered and asked, “Are you a lone cultivator, Daoist Xu?”
Xu Ziqing smiled and replied, “Indeed, I am a lone cultivator. I used to live in seclusion in the mountains, and it was by chance that I encountered Zhao, leading to my current circumstances.”
Xu Ziqing continued, “Since you are already well-acquainted with the world, you shouldn’t be too concerned about associating with people from the southern regions.”
Xu Ziqing nodded, understanding Su Xin’s good intentions, and spoke, “That day when I first saw Zhao as a child, he was so battered and bruised that I couldn’t help but feel indignant…”
Though he felt he might be overly compassionate, he didn’t mind and raised his cup. “You should be more cautious in the future. Since we are both lone cultivators and have met before, why not come with me to the Loose Cultivator Alliance? The alliance is comprised of fellow casual cultivators, and we can support each other. It’s not much different from being children of renowned sects!”
Not expecting an invitation from Su Xin, Xu Ziqing hesitated. After a moment of contemplation, he said, “I won’t deceive you, but I’ve heard that the five major families, including Xu and Tian, have recently been in conflict, and it might affect several continents.”
Su Xin confidently replied, “Those five major families may be formidable, but they can’t influence our alliance of casual cultivators.” He drew closer, his beautiful eyes shimmering, and said mischievously, “Fellow Daoist Xu, do you know where the Loose Cultivators Alliance is based?”
Xu Ziqing shook his head, saying, “I still need Fellow Daoist Su to enlighten me on that.”
Su Xin blinked, his mischievousness evident, “It’s in Upper Luzhou.”
Xu Ziqing pondered for a moment and smiled.
Upper Luzhou was the most distant of the continents, separated by a short distance from the other eight continents, almost like a separate entity. If there were any disturbances on the other continents, Upper Luzhou would remain unaffected.
However, Xu Ziqing still had reservations. If he and Su Xin joined the alliance, would they not be constrained once again? Thus, he politely declined, “I’m accustomed to my freedom, and I’m afraid I won’t be able to conform…”
The moment Su Xin heard this, he understood Xu Ziqing’s concerns and waved his hand, saying, “If you consider politeness to be a lack of caution, then I wouldn’t be worthy of being called a Demon King. Let’s not dwell on that!” He continued, “As casual cultivators, if we don’t seek shelter in the alliance, we would be asking for trouble in vain! Fellow Daoist Xu, your talents will be recognized wherever you go. But the alliance is different from those renowned sects!”
Upon hearing Su Xin’s excitement, Xu Ziqing modestly smiled and asked, “How is it different?”
Su Xin proudly declared, “In the alliance, we have two categories. If you possess any resources that don’t match your cultivation attributes, you can sell them to the alliance in exchange for alliance contributions. There’s also a trading hall where you can exchange contributions for the resources you need. This category constitutes the majority in our alliance, and they aren’t required to regularly serve the Loose Cultivator Alliance. They only need to lend a helping hand when the alliance faces a major crisis.”
Xu Ziqing regained his composure and inquired, “What about the other category?”
This time, Su Xin’s expression turned serious as he replied, “The other category consists of the core members of the Alliance. Their lives, deaths, and honor are all closely tied to the Alliance, similar to those in renowned sects.”
“These cultivators often include family members, descendants, disciples, and others who have deep connections with the Alliance, or those who have undergone loyalty tests. The second category of cultivators receives a monthly stipend from the Alliance and has different requirements compared to the first category of cultivators.”
Xu Ziqing contemplated and asked, “Are you suggesting that I can be part of the first category, Daoist Su?”
Su Xin smiled and confirmed, “Exactly. You can enjoy the benefits of the Alliance while maintaining your freedom. Isn’t that a great deal?”
Xu Ziqing silently pondered, realizing that it did sound appealing. Seeing his interest, Su Xin continued, “Fellow Daoist Xu, since we have come this far, I don’t want to keep anything from you. I invited you to join the Loose Cultivators Alliance for a personal reason as well.”
Xu Ziqing was surprised and urged him to explain, “Please, Daoist Su, go on.”
Su Xin revealed, “Fellow Daoist Xu, you may lead a leisurely life, but you should know that the Upper Nine Continents where we reside, impressive as they may be, are just a few among thousands of small worlds. Above them, there are even nine thousand grand worlds, which are incredibly fascinating.”
Xu Ziqing grew more cautious as Su Xin seemed to be sharing something highly secretive.
As expected, Su Xin continued, “But do you know that every ten years, the major sects in the Qingyun Great World recruit disciples from the small worlds?”
Xu Ziqing was astonished!
It is revealed that there is no direct connection between the large world and the small world. However, every decade, individuals who have attained a cultivation level beyond the foundation stage can access the grand world through the Dragon Ascension Gate. They have the opportunity to be chosen by prestigious sects in the grand world. If fortunate enough to be accepted, their value and status would be greatly enhanced. They would gain access to abundant resources, spiritual energy, and guidance from renowned teachers. It is akin to a fish leaping over a dragon’s gate, with its identity undergoing a remarkable transformation.
However, without the protection of a clan, family, or powerful entity to sponsor them, they might not be able to withstand the challenges and could even end up being killed.
Three years remained until the end of this ten-year period. Xu Ziqing had been invited by Su Xin because of his young age and rapid cultivation progress. Among the cultivators in the Alliance who were also expected to reach the Foundation Establishment stage, none were as talented or well-rounded as Xu Ziqing.
Su Xin, though gifted, was uncertain about his own ability to reach the Foundation Establishment stage within three years. He thought that if he could successfully establish his foundation, it would be beneficial. But if he failed and Xu Ziqing succeeded, Xu Ziqing could bring him along.
Su Xin’s statement was another accommodation granted by the Great World.
Any cultivator above the Foundation Establishment stage could bring someone with them to the Dragon Ascension Gate. However, the cultivator had to prioritize their own safety, and if they perished, no one could be held accountable.
If Xu Ziqing agreed to take Su Xin with him, the Alliance would naturally provide protection.
Even if both Su Xin and Xu Ziqing successfully established their foundations, it wouldn’t be in vain. Su Xin shared this information with Xu Ziqing to entice him into joining the Alliance, forging a friendship and potentially venturing into the larger world together. Even if there was a hint of personal interest involved, the benefits were undeniable.
After discussing these confidential matters, Su Xin’s eyes burned with ambition. He declared, “Rest assured, Xu Daoist. If you fail to establish your foundation, I can offer you my spot. Then, unless we encounter misfortune, we will both enter the Great World and seize countless opportunities!”
At that moment, Xu Ziqing had to admit that he was completely convinced by Su Xin’s words.
When he initially aspired to cultivate immortality in the Baicao Garden, it was due to the vastness of the world and the boundless possibilities. Now, with a path that could lead him to the skies, why should he hesitate?
Cultivate immortality! Cultivate immortality!
Xu Ziqing had decided to embark on this unique and magnificent path. With such a remarkable opportunity before him, he couldn’t resist the immense temptation, even if he remained composed and calm.
Taking a deep breath, Xu Ziqing opened his eyes with unwavering determination. He stated firmly, “Daoist Su, I will accompany you.”
The following day, in front of the Prince’s East Palace.
Dong Lixi stood before the Prince’s East Palace, adorned in a robe of Xuan-colored dungarees and wearing the Prince’s crown. By his side stood Dong Lizhao, who had also regained most of his princely status. Though young, he emanated determination and resolve.
The two brothers, resembling a dragon and a phoenix, exuded a majestic golden aura that reached the heavens.
Not desiring to engage in conversation with the southern officials, Dong Lixie took the lead and waited for Xu Ziqing to bid them farewell.
Xu Ziqing first looked at Dong Lizhao and spoke, “Zhao’er, in this lifetime, we may never meet again. You must support each other with your brother to strengthen the kingdom.”
Tears welled up in Dong Lizhao’s eyes as he respectfully replied, “Yes, sir. Zhao understands.”
Xu Ziqing felt sorrow witnessing Dong Lizhao endure such hardship at such a tender age, which stirred his empathy. He said, “As a younger brother, you must share your brother’s burdens and take good care of yourself. Brother Yun once said that by wielding your sword 3,000 times a day without prejudice, you will cultivate a righteous sword heart that no evil can assail.”
Dong Lizhao vigorously nodded and exclaimed, “Yes, Zhao understands! I will follow your guidance!”
Xu Ziqing smiled and gently caressed his hair. Then he turned to Dong Lixi and spoke, “Your Highness, your wisdom and resourcefulness have been of great benefit. However, because of this, there is also a downside. I fear…” He intended to say “It may harm your longevity,” but instead chose a more polite expression, “I fear that there might be some consequences.”
Dong Lixi already exuded an emperor’s majesty, yet he replied with respect, “I understand your concerns, sir. As you embark on your journey towards immortality, I will pray day and night for your well-being and a successful journey.”
Xu Ziqing faintly smiled and said, “I am grateful for Your Highness’s kindness.”
At that point, further words were unnecessary.
The Dong brothers exchanged glances and simultaneously bowed deeply, offering a profound salute. “Sir, take care!”
Xu Ziqing cast one last glance at them and sighed, “Take care of yourselves as well. We shall not meet again.”
With those words, he turned and walked away, gracefully moving toward Su Xin’s side.
Su Xin raised his hand and tossed out a magical artifact, which transformed into a small boat hovering in the air.
With a slight shift, Xu Ziqing stood beside him.
The bird screeched and perched on Xu Ziqing’s shoulder with its sharp, hooked claws.
Then, the boat shimmered with colorful light, ascending into the air and vanishing without a trace in an instant.
-The boat soared through the air and vanished.
General Jiao Tu’s rebellion against the Chenghuang Kingdom was ultimately quelled by Prince Dong Lixi, resulting in his execution.
In that same year, the crown prince ascended to the throne, having been injured by Jiao Tu and facing the risk of losing his heir. Therefore, he refrained from establishing a harem and instead appointed his younger brother, Dong Lizhao, as the imperial younger brother.
During his ten-year reign, Dong Lixi dedicated himself to the prosperity and welfare of the country, making Chenghuang a thriving and illustrious kingdom among all others.
At the end of his ten-year reign, Dong Lixi passed the throne to Dong Lizhao.
Within the emperor’s chambers…
Dong Lixi lay on his bed, his hair as white and frail as wood.
After years of arduous efforts for the nation, his mind burdened and exhausted, he had finally depleted his life force.
Dong Lizhao sat on the edge of the bed, clutching his brother’s right hand, his eyes filled with redness. He addressed him as “Imperial brother.”
Dong Lixi responded with a calm smile, saying, “Zhao’er, everyone meets their end eventually. There’s no need to be so sorrowful.”
Dong Lizhao wiped away his tears and replied in a quivering voice, “Yes, I understand.”
Dong Lixi continued, “I have imparted all my knowledge to you throughout the years, and you have never disappointed me. The first thing I wish for is your happiness. Even so, I hope you find someone who will be faithful and can alleviate your loneliness.”
“Don’t end up like your brother, who lost his love without even realizing it, but his love was too profound… leaving behind no regrets…”
Dong Lizhao choked back his emotions and replied, “Yes.”
Suddenly, he felt his hand slipping away, as Dong Lixi’s palm fell helplessly.
“Brother!” he exclaimed in disbelief.
The ceremonial rituals and mournful melodies commenced as Dong Lixi, the current ruler of the Chenghuang Kingdom, passed away.
From that moment onward, Dong Lizhao ascended to the throne, and the Chenghuang Kingdom was reborn.
On the spirit boat, Xu Ziqing’s consciousness delved into the ring, muttering, “Brother Yun, last night I finally stained my hands with human blood. Despite being a blood demon, I am still tormented.”
Yun Lie responded, “If Jiao Tu had not been eliminated, the blood demon would have never ceased to exist.”
Xu Ziqing sighed, “That’s true, but it’s still difficult to find peace in my heart.”
Yun Lie remained silent.
After a long pause, Yun Lie spoke, “Jiao Tu’s soul still lingers.”
Xu Ziqing smiled with a sense of relief, saying, “So… there is some solace.”
